Connemara started off as many towns did back in the day, with a speculators dream and the potential of the CPR. A fellow by the name of Thomas Newell homesteaded on the west side of silver lake north of where the Connemara elevators once stood. (Silver lake sits on the east side of Hwy 2 and runs across range road 170). Thomas promoted the sale of lots on his titled land to people in Toronto and England with the idea of starting his very own Silver City. Although he was able to sell a few lots, his dream of wealth and potential for the town never really materialized as any remnants of buildings and such no longer remain,. The name “Connemara” hails from Ireland and the region is known for a specific breed of ponies and exquisite marble.
